Maintenance of Ross Reels
Ross reels never need to be lubricated. In fact lubrication of the disc drag mechanism will make it inoperable. The synthetic materials used in the Ross reels are self-lubricating and require no additional maintenance. Also, the bushings are oil-impregnated for the spindle to spool interface. The bronze bushings are impregnated with oil through extreme heat and pressure. When the spool bushing rotates on the frame's spindle, a capillary action occurs where lubrication leeches out of the pores of the bushing onto the stainless spindle. The result is an ultra-smooth rotation which eliminates the need for added lubrication, It is simple, yet effective.
Cleaning a Ross reel is simple. The lack of unnecessary lubrication is the reason Ross reels are so easy to maintain. When you eliminate an attractant for dirt and miscellaneous debris, you also eliminate the need for the care required by most competitors' reels. Because the reels are anodized, they can be used in both fresh and saltwater. Anodizing is a electro-chemical process that allows a surface oxide to build up as well as penetrate into the pores of the aluminum. Anodize protects Ross reels from corrosion that may result from saltwater exposure or other harsh environments. The barrier created by the anodize guarantees a lifetime of use without surface deterioration. It is recommended that you clean the reel after exposure to a salt or alkali environment. Both the frame and the spool should be soaked in warm freshwater and then rinsed in fresh running water. For best results separate the spool from the frame and fully disengage the drag (rotate the drag knob counter clockwise until the stopping position is reached) to allow freshwater to flush saltwater and debris from the drag system. Allow the frame and spool time to air dry before reattaching the spool to the frame and storing the reel.
