Backcountry Angler's  Montana fly fishing guide service has a select staff of professional guides that can ensure you a quality experience while fishing on our famous waters for truly wild trout. All of our guides have been hand picked for their overall level of experience and skill, patience,  and instructional abilities. We are licensed, insured, and one of the largest authorized holders of special use permits on the restricted waters of the Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers. We also one of the few outfitters holding permits to fish the pristine waters in the Beaverhead National Forest. Float fishing is the most productive method to fish our blue ribbon streams. Our fly fishing guides utilize drift boats as well as rafts. Your guide with years of expertise will position the boat to give you the best possible cast into the finest holding water. You will also wade fish the most productive runs and riffles. Float trips are accentuated by a tasty streamside lunch. We offer packaged trips that include guided fishing and lodging at our new river lodge. For the best fly fishing adventure in Southwestern Montana we suggest our 5-day Packages. Our western lodge is very comfortable and convenient. We guide on the famous Beaverhead River, Big Hole River, Madison River, Ruby River, Clark Canyon Reservoir, Poindexter Slough, and private waters. We fish for grayling and west slope cutthroat trout on our backcountry trips.

Your host Tom Smith, 53, grew up fly fishing and has guided professionally in Southwest Montana since the early 80's . He is one of the most experienced Outfitters in Montana guiding over 100 days most years. The Fly Fishing business has been his only occupation since starting his career in the 70's. He has also guided in the Florida Keys for a number of years for Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit. He is a licensed Montana Outfitter and a Captain licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Tom is the head outfitter for Backcountry Angler, working with a select staff of professional guides to ensure you a quality fly fishing experience.

Andrew Bennett is a long-time Montana resident with 13 years of guiding experience in Montana. He made his way to Montana after High School to pursue a degree in Geography and History and a major in fly fishing and skiing!  Growing up in a large family with sisters, Andy has acquired endless patience and is a wonderful instructor! He is a polished professional in every aspect. He is one of our most requested guides. Andy loves the Big Hole  as well as the Beaverhead and Madison. His trusty dog Monty is never far behind!  If not fishing, you can find Andy glassing for native wildlife, hunting, skiing, ice fishing or spending time with his family.

Rick Knight  has been fly fishing and tying flies for 30+ years. His enthusiasm for the sport is contagious and will surely have you planning your next trip to Southwestern Montana. Whether you are a novice or an expert fly fisherman, Rick loves to transfer his knowledge from the very basics of casting to the most technical dry fly fishing. When Rick is not on the water he is usually spending time with his wife and kids or plotting his next fishing strategy for his clients. A famous "Rick" quote: "I'm not sure how long the trout was but he went past my shoulders on each side."

Terry Throckmorton grew up fishing in Southwestern Montana. He has guided and outfitted in the Dillon area for 20+ years. Terry can be very intense when helping you to catch THE BIG ONE but, he can also be laid back enough to help you become a better fisherman. He is a natural outdoorsman. Often Terry can be found on horseback as well as in a river.
